Black Power

Black Power

The two American men have raised their hands to show the power that they have gained for their race from winning in the Olympics. The image is very moving, it is similar to a non-violent protest in the way that it gains publicity and supports equal rights. In light of everything I know about segregation in the 60's, I am proud of the American men in this photo as they knew the risk of what they did - the consequences included.

What's it like for a black actor for the past 50 years?

Black people where seen as weak for many years. For example, when black people where cast in Horror movies they would often be stereotyped as the ones to "die first" but these stereotypes are beginning to shift.

As well as this, the black actors are being cast as main characters instead of secondary characters like drug dealers, prostitutes and murderers/prisoners. Eventually, black people where cast as heroes, which contrasted to the earlier attitudes which didn't allow this type of limelight. In 1905, black people weren't allowed to be in movies, instead, the roles of black people where played by white actors wearing "black face".

Morgan Freeman's first movie was 1971's Who Says I Can't Ride a Rainbow.
